The highlight of the week was a visit today to Copenhagen. We started with a trip around the shopping streets. The sale was still on and if you were interested you could get 70% reduction off the price. In spite of the cold weather (+1º Celcius) there were lot of flowers sold in the street. I even saw peonies for sale. But spring seemed to be far away though pansies already were blooming in the borders around the Town Hall.
After a few hours we went on to Ordrupgaard Art Gallery. This gem is situated in the north of Copenhagen. In the beginning Wilhelm and Henny Hansen lived here, they were collectors of modern art in their days. Their home were later to be a gallery for 19th-century Danish and French art.
A few years ago the old building got a modern addition, designed by the Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. The new building in glass and black concrete melts very well with the green surroundings and seems to be a natural part of the old house.
On Ordrupgaard we saw a fantastic exhibition with Gustave Caillebotte, one of the more unknown impressionist artists. He lived between 1848 and 1894 and was born into a wealthy family in Paris. He had a great love for the sea and ships which inflected his whole life and also influenced his art. Beside his art he was one of France leading yachtsmen and he both designed and constructed sailingboats.
Expect from water and ships, he painted Paris - the streets, the straight boulevards and the modern life.
