Walking in Berlin

Trots att vi hade bilen med oss till Berlin, lät vi den stå mesta tiden. I stället promenerade vi mycket. Det finns väl inget bättre sätt att lära känna en stad än genom att vandra omkring i den.

I gamla Östberlin besökte vi det vackra torget Gendarmensmarkt med sina två "tvillingdomer" på varsin sida av torget, franska respektive tyska kyrkan. I mitten ligger konserthuset.

Though we had our car with us to Berlin, we let the car stay at the hotel most of the time. Instead we walked a lot. There is no better way to know a city than by walking around in it.

In the old East Berlin we visited the beautiful square Gendarmensmarkt with its two twin churches on each side of the square, the French and the German church. In the middle is the concert hall.

Vi promenerade uppför Unter den Linden till Museuminsel. Ön ligger i Spree och är fylld av pampiga museer. Intill ligger den stora Berliner Dom vars kupol syns på långt håll. Kyrkan skadades svårt under andra världskriget och fick återuppbyggas innan den kunde öppnas igen 1993.

We walked along Unter den Linden to the Museuminsel. The island is situated in the river Spree and is filled with grand museums. Nearby is the great Berliner Dom. You can see the dome from a long distance. The church was seriously damage during the second World War and had to be restored before it could open again 1993.

Vi blev överväldigade av Pergamonmuseet som innehöll ett tempel som grävts fram i den grekiska staden Pergamon i slutet av 1800-talet och porten till den romerska staden Milet. Båda städerna låg i nuvarande Turkiet. Men det största intrycket gjorde den blå Ishtarporten, en av åtta portar till Babylon, byggd på 600-talet f Kr.

We got overwhelmed by the Pergamon museum and the great ancient temple that was found in the Greek city of Pergamon in the 19th century and the gate to the Roman city of Miletos. Both cities were situated in what is Turkey today. But the greatest impression was the blue Ishtar gate from the city of Babylon, built 600 years before Christ.

Imponerande var också Neues Museum med sin egyptiska samling. Den största attraktionen var förstås bysten av Nefertiti!

Overwhelming was also the Neues Museum with its Egyptian exhibition. The biggest attractions was of course the famous Nefertiti!

En annan dag besökte vi Gemäldegalerie som inte ligger långt ifrån Potsdamer Platz. Vi gick här i många timmar och njöt av alla vackra målningar från 1400-talet fram till 1700-talet, bl a av Botticelli och Hans Holbein.

Another day we visited the Gemäldegalerie, not far from Potsdamer Platz. We spent hours here and enjoyed a lot of beautiful paintings from the 15th century to the 18th century and artists like Botticelli and Hans Holbein.

The angels have arrived

Om en månad är det advent och änglarna har landat i Poppins' Garden - Shop. Här finns änglar i olika storlekar och änglar som inte bara passar till jul utan även året om.

Dessutom finns även julkort och ljus till försäljning.

It is December in just a month. The angels have arrived in my shop and there are angels not only for Xmas. I also have Xmas cards and candles.

No worries - Sanssouci

En hel dag av vår semester tillbringade vi i Potsdam, en stad strax söder om Berlin. Stadens stora sevärdhet är Sanssouciparken, en jättestor slottsanläggning om 287 hektar. Det tar flera timmar att promenera runt för att se parken och hinna besöka slotten.

Huvudattraktionen är själva slottet Sanssouci (betyder Utan bekymmer), ett gult sommarpalats som tronar högt ovanför parken. Det var Fredrik den store (Fredrik II) som ritade och lät bygga slottet i mitten av 1700-talet.

We spent a whole day of our vacation in Potsdam, a city south of Berlin. The great sights of this town is the Park Sanssouci, a huge park grounds of over 700 acres. It takes several hours to walk through the park and to visit the palaces.

The main attraction is the palace Sanssouci (which means No Worries), a yellow summer palace which is situated high above the park. It was Frederick the Great (Frederick II) who designed and built the palace in the Mid 18th century.

Parken är uppdelad i flera olika trädgårdar. Naturen är ännu vackrare nu i oktoberskrud och överallt finns skulpturer att upptäcka (och fotografera).

The park is divided in to several gardens. The nature is even more lovely now in October and everywhere are sculptures to discover (and to photograph).

Det finns många olika byggnader i parken, bl a det här kinesiska tehuset med alla sina gulddetaljer.

There are a lot of buildings in the park, for example this Chinese house filled with gold details.

Det här är trädgårdsmästarens villa! Tror jag tar jobbet om det blir ledigt...

This is the gardener's house! I think I will try to get this job when it will become vacant...

I andra ändan av parken ligger Neues Palais, uppfört på 1760-talet. Ett stort palats med mer än 200 rum. Vi får inte besöka alla men hasar omkring i jättestora tofflor i flera rum och våningar.

In the other side of the park is Neues Palais, build in the 1760s. It is a large palace with more than 200 rooms. We are not allowed to visit them all but we shuffle around in huge slippers in several rooms and floors.

Det här är Orangeriet, ett annat palats i parken. Det är betydligt större än vad man ser på bilden och byggdes i mitten av 1800-talet som kungligt gästhus.

This is the Orangerie, another palace in the park. It is bigger than the picture shows and was built in the middle of the 19th century as a royal guest house.

Dagen avslutade på ett slott precis intill Sanssouciparken - Cecilienhof. Idag är det ett förstaklasshotell men restaurangen är inte alltför dyr. Här åt vi riktig god tysk mat.

Cecilienhof är byggt i början av 1900-talet i engelsk stil. Här ägde Potsdamkonferensen rum 1945 då man beslutade hur Tyskland skulle administreras efter krigsslutet. Så vi har suttit i samma miljö som Churchill, Truman och Stalin!

The day ends at a nearby palace - the Cecilienhof. Today it is a first class hotel but the restaurant is not too expensive.We ate a wonderful German meal.

Cecilienhof is built in the beginning of the 20th century in an English style. It was here the Potsdam Conference took place in 1945 and the subject was how Germany would be administrated after the war.  So we have been in the same sourrundings as Churchill, Truman and Stalin!

Back from Berlin

Mannen och jag kom hem från Berlin igår. Jag har upplevt så mycket kultur att jag är alldeles matt. Och vi har promenerat så mycket att jag har blåsor under fötterna. Men det har varit en intressant resa. Jag har aldrig varit i Berlin tidigare och blev positivt överraskad av vad staden hade att erbjuda.

Vårt hotell låg några kvarter söder om Potsdamer Platz. Torget blev "hemma" för oss och vi tillbringade varje kväll på här och på mötesplatsen Sony Center. Efter att staden återförenats blev Potsdamer Platz en enda stor byggarbetsplats - här gick ju muren rakt igenom staden och det gamla centret var tomt och öde. Nu trängs de nya byggnaderna kring torget. Trots att allt är nytt känns det hemtrevligt och livligt.

The husband and I arrived from Berlin yesterday. I have experienced so much culture that I am exhausted. And I have been walking around so much that my feet are still hurting. But it has been a lovely visit. I have never been to Berlin before and I was was happily surprised by what the city can offer.

Our hotel was situated a few blocks south of the Potsdamer Platz. The square turned into "home" for us and we went here and to the Sony Center every evening. After the city was reunited the Potsdamer Platz turned into a big building place - the wall went right through it and the old center was empty and abandoned. Now the new buildings are all around. Even though everything is new the square feels nice and vivid.

Sony Center är ett torg som både är inomhus och utomhus. I husen runt om finns kontor, på torget finns caféer, biograf och filmmuseum. Högt ovan svävar ett uppspänt tak. Vackert och imponerande.

The Sony Center is a square that is both indoors and outdoors. In the buildings are offices, on the square are cafés, cinema and a museum for film. High up hangs the ceiling. Beautiful and impressive.

Lite längre norrut ligger Brandenburger Tor och det tog inte många minuter att promenera dit. På vägen passerade vi monumentet över förintelsen. Ett vackert men också sorgligt område.

Detta var vår första dag. Jag återkommer med fler glimtar från Berlin längre fram.

A bit further north is the Brandenburger Tor and it did not take long to get there. On the way we passed the Holocaust Memorial. A beautiful but sad place.

You never want it to end

En liten höstbukett står på bordet. Det är The Pilgrim som nu i oktober är mycket mindre än på sommaren. Klematisen heter Perle d'Azur och har blommat ända sedan juli. De vackra nyponen kommer från den gammeldagsrosen Princess Lamballe.

Jag har precis läst ut romanen "Svantjuvarna" av Elizabeth Kostova. Det var en härlig läsupplevelse där man vandrar från 1880-talets Paris via New York på 1980-talet till Washington kring milleniumskiftet. Berättare är psykiatikern Andrew Marlow som arbetar på en klinik i Washington. En dag får han en ny patient, en begåvad konstnär vid namn Robert Oliver. Oliver har blivit inlagd efter ett sammanbrott och efter att försökt förstöra en tavla på National Gallery. Han vägrar kommunicera med omvärlden och Marlow får ingen förklaring till hans attack. Fascinerad av sin patient, börjar Marlow undersöka Olivers liv och vem den vackra kvinnan i 1800-tals kläder som dyker upp tavla efter tavla som Oliver målar.
Det är en bok som man ska sjunka in i, läsa sakta och njuta av det vackra språket och de lika vackra bilderna som målas upp i ens inre. Det är en bok som handlar om konst men också om livet. Det är en bok som du önskar inte vill ta slut.

I have just finished the novel "The Swan Thieves" by Elizabeth Kostova. It is a wonderful story in which you travel from Paris in the 1880s via New York in the 1980s to Washington DC at the end of the 20th century. The teller is dr Andrew Marlow who works at a clinic in Washington. One day he gets a new patient, the talented artist Robert Oliver. Oliver has been taken to the clinic after a mental breakdown when he tried to destroy a painting at the National Gallery. He refuces to communicate and dr Marlow gets no explanation to his attack on the painting. Marlow gets fascinated by his patient and starts to investigate Oliver's life and who the beautiful woman is, she appears in clothes from 1880s in painting after painting by Oliver.
This is a novel to read slowly, enjoying the lovely words and the lovely pictures who grow inside. This is a novel about art but also about life. This is a novel you never want to end.

Winter inspiration

Jag blir inspirerad av Gudrun Sjödéns kläder. Så inspirerad att jag var tvungen att låna dessa foton och lägga ut dem på bloggen. Vilken härlig vinterkollektion! Jag vill ha allting men så klart sätter plånboken stopp för sådana utsvävningar.

I get inspired by Gudrun Sjödén. Very inspired, I have to post those photos on my blog. What a lovely winter collection! I want everything but of course the prices set a limit for that.

To relax

Det bästa sättet att koppla av för mig är att läsa en bok eller rensa hjärnan med att lösa ett korsord eller lägga en patiens. Under tiden så behandlar jag omedvetet det som behövs bli behandlat i hjärnan. Behöver jag hitta en lösning på ett problem så dyker det oftast upp av sig själv, hjärnan har behandlat det parallellt medan jag läste min bok.

Ett annat sätt att koppla av är förstås att göra något kreativt. Fotografera till exempel. Eller handarbeta. Tänk så många tankar man väver in i ett stickad tröja. Nu var det länge sedan jag stickade men ibland känner jag lust till det. I veckan tog jag mig tid till att pyssla lite med decoupage. Det är ett roligt sätt att använda bilder och färg på. Idag ska jag koppla av med att arbeta i trädgården. Hösten närmar sig Skåne och det är dags att plocka undan krukväxter och stoppa in utemöblerna i förrådet. Tomaterna ger fortfarande skörd men eftersom det kan komma en frostnatt när som helst, får jag nog plocka av de gröna och hoppas att de mognar inomhus.

The best way for me to relax is to read a book or clear my brain with a crossword or a patience. Meanwhile I will deal with things that need to be dealed with. If I need a solution to a problem, my brain will deal with it at the same time I read my book.

I also relax by doing something creative. Like photographing. Or needlework or knitting. Imagine how many thoughts you weave into a knitted sweater. It is a long time since I knitted anything but sometimes I feel like doing it. This week I did som decoupage. It is a fun way to do something creative with pictures and photos. What I did? You can see it in the photo above.

Today I will relax in the garden. The autumn is coming and the first frosty night can be here soon. It is time to put away potted plants and our outdoor furnitures. I can still harvest tomatoes but I guess I have to pick the green ones and hope they will turn red indoor.
